Hockey the national game has long been neglected by youth and to this day has been confined to government employees. If more youth opt for the game, we could take the game to towering peaks.

At last on Wednesday, ending the long dilemma the International Hockey Federation (FIH) President Leandro Negro announced that India will host final of the inaugural World Hockey League that will now serve as a qualifying tournament for both the World Cup and Olympics. Adding, the FIH World League would kick-off a month after the 2012 London Olympics. The tourney will carry on for over 2 years. The final round of the women’s event will be hosted by Argentina in December, 2013 and India will host the men’s final round in January, 2014.

The FIH President came stern on the rebel league World Series Hockey (WSH), has not been recognized by the association. And anyone opting to participate will face sanctions. WSH is being jointly promoted by the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) and Nimbus Sports. “Our stand is very clear. Players and officials are free to join any league, but we have sanctions in place. The WSH is a very good idea and profitable for players, but will only recognize tournaments that are held under the aegis of Hockey India,” said Kelly Fairweather, FIH chief executive officer.

The FIH World league is mostly based on the cricket format. 80 men-teams and 52 women-teams are going to participate in this mammoth event stretched for a little over two years. Six to seven teams each will qualify in both sections and they will join the five continental champions and host nation to form the line-up for the World Cup and the Olympic Games.

The Indian hockey teams have marked their way into the London Olympics by winning over their rivals at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium here on Tuesday. But due honors go to ace drag-flicker Sandeep Singh for his scintillating goals by scoring two out of three penalty corners. Sandeep was also the leading goal scorer in the tournament. He scored seven goals from three matches.
The other day it was senior player Gautam Gambhir who vented out his ire on the Indian captain M S Dhoni and yesterday it was another senior player Virendra Sehwag. As per an early decision of Dhoni three senior players, along with Sachin Tendulkar were given rest, in the ODI to pack the squad with more juniors. This was spelt as a preparation strategy for a better squad for the forthcoming world cup. Initially it was a team decision. But later Dhoni is rumored to have commented that the three seniors cost the team a minimum of twenty runs due to fielding lapses, to the team in its fight. T6his comment was ridiculed by two seniors, while Sachin kept silent as susal and never let out his feelings on the comment. Dhoni is further added to have said that henceforth the three will not play in a match together.

"I did not know what he (Dhoni) said and what's going on in media. He told us he wanted to give chance to youngsters who had come here and play the next World Cup. That's what he told us," said Sehwag. "Have you seen my catch?" Sehwag snapped back in response, adding "we have been fielding the same way for the last 10 years."

Asked if he would clear the air with Dhoni, Sehwag retorted, "Why should I have chat with him? He is the captain and leader. If he and coach think they need to give break to top order, I am okay with it, I have no problem with it."

"I am available for all the matches. It depends on the captain and coach what 11 they pick. If they give me a reason that we are giving chance to youngsters and we take a break, I am happy with that," he said. And he also denied of any rift with the captain over any issue. In addition, he blamed himself of his poor performance as a batsman, "Obviously, we are not giving good starts. I couldn't score runs. I have to look at my own shot selection. I need to give little more time to myself and then I can play my shots. I am hitting well but not converting. I am getting out in funny way, like flicking to point. I am hoping to leave (deliveries) early and then take on the bowlers," he said. [ With inputs from internet ]

Sachin Tendulkar and Doug Bracewell have won the Test batting and bowling awards in the fifth annual ESPNcricinfo Awards, announced today.

Tendulkar's 146 in Cape Town early in 2011 came in testing conditions and in the face of some sublime swing bowling by Dale Steyn. Bracewell won in his debut year in international cricket, for his 6 for 40 in New Zealand's historic seven-run win against Australia in Hobart.

Another first for the awards was the victory of an Associate player - Kevin O'Brien, who got votes from 13 out of the panel of 16 jurors, for his nerveless century in Ireland's historic win over England in the World Cup . The ODI bowling award didn't emerge from the global tournament, though there were five World Cup performances among the nominees. Mitchell Johnson won it for his six-wicket haul in Pallekele during Australia's tour to Sri Lanka.

The awards were decided by a 16-member jury that included former players Ian Chappell, Ian Bishop, Ramiz Raja, Kepler Wessels, Geoff Boycott, Martin Crowe, Sanjay Manjrekar and Russel Arnold, and ESPNcricinfo's senior writers. The jurors were asked to pick their top three performances in each category from a shortlist of nominees.

The Test and ODI bowling performances were closely fought. Stuart Broad was the loser by a just a point in both categories - for his 4 for 15 in the World Cup match against South Africa and his six-for, which included a hat-trick, in the Trent Bridge Test* against India. However, he beat Steyn, 2010's Test bowling winner, by six points in Tests and four points in ODIs.

The Test batting category had the widest gap between the winner and No. 2 - six points separated Tendulkar's innings and Michael Clarke's 151, also scored in Cape Town, in the Test in which Australia dismissed South Africa for 96 and were then bowled out in their second innings for 47.

Tendulkar was the No. 1 choice of seven jurors out of the 11 who had him in their top three. O'Brien's figures were the next best, with six No. 1 votes.

Bishop, the former West Indies bowler, said O' Brien's innings was exceptional. "The manner in which it was scored when his team was in the situation that it was… the type of power-hitting showed, the type of fearlessness he showed augurs well for him and his team."

While it was Tendulkar's second ESPNcricinfo Award - he won the ODI Batting performance in 2009 for his 175 against Australia in Hyderabad - it was a first for the rest.

Chappell, a former Australia captain, said Tendulkar showed true class during his 146. "He faced 314 balls which is not Tendulkar-like, the strike rate, but these were precious runs. This was another side of Tendulkar, just showing his greatness - his ability to make runs when things were really tough, and he really had to battle."

ESPNcricinfo's readers agreed with the jury's assessment of the Test batting performance but picked Virender Sehwag, Junaid Khan and Shahid Afridi in the other three categories. [ from ESPN Cricinfo ]

On Saturday in the Asian Grand Prix Archery tournament at Bangkok proved lucky for the Indian archers. They shot meticulously and had a rich haul of medals, in the individual section. The medals earned at the tournament included one gold, 3 silver and a bronze. The 18-year-old Services' archer Chittibomma Jignas narrowly beats National champion Rajat Chauhan in a tie at th all-indian final in the men’s compound event. This gold medal was his second international medal, after the silver he bagged at the third Asian Grand Prix at Dhaka in May last. Another Indian archer Chaterjee lost to Vietnam’s Nguyen Tien Cuong at 143-147 in the semis leaving the bronze to him.

But India’s thirst for the coveted recurve division win evaded once again, with both Mangal Singh Champia and Chekrovolu Swuro had to settle for just silver. Champia lost to French archer Romain Girouille in the men’s semis. In the women’s semis Swuro lost to Japan’s Ren Hayakawa. Both the Indian entries in the women's compound bowed out in the semi final. Jhano Hansdah lost to ultimate gold medal winner Aung Ngeain of Myanmar 142-145 and Gagandeep Kaur fell to silver medallist Nurfatehah Mat Salleh Fatin of Malaysia 141-143.

In the battle for bronze, Jhano prevailed over her much younger opponent in the tie-breaker after a 139-139 tie. Jhano broke the stalemate by hitting the bull's eye while Gagandeep collected only 8. The team finals will be held on Sunday.

Shoaib Akhtar, former Pakistan pacer slammed the Pakistan debacle against England, due to the negligence of the captain Misbah-ul-haq. The Pakistan team is playing against the English team on neutral grounds at UAE. In the series of four ODI, England is up by 2-0. On the other hand the Pakistan opener and all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez has expressed confidence about the team's ability to bounce back and win the remaining one-day internationals.

"We can still come back hard because we believe in our team. We have a lot of match-winners in our side and anybody can come in and win the game for Pakistan," expressed Hafeez. Personally he was a big failure himself in the last two matches and just scored 5 and 26 before being out.

But Akhtar minced no words in expressing his feelings on the captain for the failure. He slammed Captain Misbahul Haq, who led Pakistan to a stunning 3-0 whitewash against England in the Test series, for failing to be 'strict with the players'. "Misbah needs to be stricter with the players. The way Imran Farhat, Umar Akmal and Shahid Afridi got out today, I think Misbah needs to tell them what is expected of them as senior players. When Umar was batting and trying needless strokes, what was Misbah doing? He should have spoken to him. If Misbah doesn't get strict and press the red button I don't think we can win this series," Shoaib said.

The much controversial Australian batsman Andrew Symonds quit from all forms of cricket, on Thursday. His announcement was not all that strange as good scores and the Australian Cricket board was evading him since sometime. He later announced his decision to quit from Mumbai Indians in the IPL 5, which is just around the corner. The master batsman, who had contributed many a dedicated victories to his country, could not maintain the same record in his stint at the Mumbai Indians. His performance was very weak in the IPL 4 and the same followed in the Champions league too. He could only pile up a meek 26 runs only in the last 4 Champion league matches.

He was the most popular overseas player at the IPL auction in 2008, where he commanded USD 1.35 million, and was in the Deccan Chargers dugout. Later in 2011 he walked in to the Mumbai Indians dugout for a whooping price tag of $850,000. What a phenomenal rise. Apart from that media sources report that he did not gel well with the Mumbai Indians. But a Mumbai Indians spokesperson was quoted by ESPN Cricinfo: "Andrew Symonds was an integral part of Mumbai Indians in season four as well as our Champions League-winning team. He was a great team player and the youngsters always looked up to him for guidance."

But at this moment I would like to narrate a personal experience when I first came across Andrew Symonds at the UPPAL stadium in Hyderabad, in the run up to the semis of IPL 4. For some reason Sachin was not playing, if I remember right and Harbhajju don the role of captain of the Mumbai Indians. Looking at the situation and knowing well about the dirty scandal between Symmo and Bhjju, I thought their on-field chemistry would be bad. But my opinions were absolutely wrong. As both used to gather after every crucial over and change the field placements in the last overs. Then I realized how we are capable of blowing things beyond proportions.

Sri Lanka thump Australia for first win of the series

A rejuvenated Sri Lanka excelled with the ball and in the field to cut down Australia's batting and then raced impudently to their rain-reduced target for an eight-wicket victory and a bonus point in a lopsided encounter at the SCG.

Scorecard

Despite the best efforts of David Hussey, the hosts were rumbled out for 158, their lowest at the ground since 1997 and fourth-lowest in all ODIs in Sydney, in a match reduced to 41 overs-per-side by a two-hour rain delay that took place when Australia were a punch-drunk 6 for 88. Tillakaratne Dilshan and the captain Mahela Jayawardena then removed all doubt about the contest with a stand of 74 inside 12 overs.

Jayawardene was still there when the winning runs were collected with 16.5 overs to spare, surprising a crowd of 22,365 and pushing Sri Lanka back into finals contention with seven points after four matches. India lead the table on 10, while a suddenly wobbly Australia have nine.

It was an unhappy return to captaincy for Ricky Ponting, who could rouse neither himself from an ODI batting slumber nor his team from the flat patch they have slipped into following a successful Test summer. Ponting is likely to still have the job on Sunday against India at the Gabba as Michael Clarke struggles to recover from a hamstring strain. The hosts' batting was inattentive and wasteful in the afternoon, and there was precious little spark with the ball or in the field, thus maintaining the unsettling form line that began in Adelaide on Sunday.

Farveez Maharoof bowled intelligently for the visitors on his recall to the team, while Lasith Malinga struck a key early blow by defeating David Warner with a slower ball. Thisara Perera engineered two run-outs and claimed two wickets at the bowling crease, and Angelo Mathews maintained his strong form in this series by accounting for Michael Hussey.

David Hussey was left to salvage something from the innings, though he was fortunate to survive a dropped chance from Malinga at third man when on eight. After the rain cleared he went on to a meritorious 58, maintaining his strongest summer yet for Australia. His efforts ensured some kind of chase for Sri Lanka, a prospect that looked grim at 8 for 104.

Given a chance to add a sixth win from their last eight matches at the ground, Dilshan and Jayawardena wasted little time setting about the target. Jayawardena pinged a perfect off-drive in Mitchell Starc's first over, and Dilshan added a flatly-pulled six in the left-armer's second.

Brett Lee's return to the team after a broken toe was rushed, and Dilshan made him pay for it by cracking a hat-trick of boundaries through the leg side as the bowler dropped short. Dilshan edged Clint McKay to slip when still five short of his half century, but by that point nearly half the target had been swallowed up in quick time and the rest of the runs were collected without fuss.

Ponting was happy to bat first on what looked a pitch for batting, but soon the clouds had closed in on both the ground and the Australian batsmen. Warner struck a pair of crisp boundaries but struggled to read Malinga's changes of pace, and ultimately lobbed a catch to mid-on when trying to get down the pitch.

Maharoof took note of Malinga's craftiness, and used a similar ruse to account for Ponting. Nicely disguised, a slower ball had Ponting too far into the stroke to avoid pushing back a simple return catch, and departing for another slim score this series.

Matthew Wade's demise occurred after Perera swooped from short cover to turn a possible single into a horrid run-out, the wicketkeeper and Peter Forrest both at the same end before Wade elected to sacrifice his wicket. Sri Lanka's alertness in the field had been apparent, it was justly rewarded here.

Michael Hussey struck one six from Mathews but next ball he fenced at a delivery too close to his body for the shot and edged behind. Forrest fiddled at Maharoof's exemplary length and line to offer a catch to slip, and Christian shuffled across to be lbw to Perera. The rain then arrived, leaving Australia in a parlous position.

Two hours of showers swept across the ground, reducing the allotted number of overs. The hosts had only 15 to bat when they resumed, and soon lost another two wickets. McKay was fooled by Rangana Herath's straight ball, then Lee was the victim of another Perera swoop, this time for a direct hit from wide mid-off.

David Hussey was in dire need of any kind of support, and for 49 runs he received it from Starc. Hussey cracked boundaries through point, midwicket and down the ground, but on 33 was again reprieved, this time when Mathews shelled a difficult chance at short cover. Perera ultimately claimed Hussey, and Starc was run out to complete a most unsatisfactory innings for the hosts. Things would only get worse as day gave way to night.
The Philanthropic side of Team Australia emerged bright on Thursday when the team visited a sick children hospital in Sydney. Dressed as clowns they were hilarious and entertaining the children in the hospital.

Dressed in clown gear, David Warner was joined by team-mates David Hussey, Peter Forrest and Clint McKay, who entertained young patients at the hospital. "It's a good opportunity for myself and a few other guys to come here and put some smiles on the kids faces. Dressing up in some clown outfits is fantastic. I don't have a favorite clown," The Herald Sun quoted Warner, as saying.

Participating for publicity was different and participating whole heartedly shows the philanthropic side of a person. That’s what happened on Thursday. All of them were spontaneous and genuine in their approach. The children must have enjoyed every moment of their stay at the hospital. For most they would have been the heroes of the kids, who were entertained. [ with the inputs from internet and andhrawishesh ]

What makes Leander what he is today at 38? The question was exposed by an online media source, which is brought to you for enrichment. But much has gone into the player to top the list and do pride to our nation. A true legend worth our reverence!!! The ace tennis player played doubles with Mahesh Bhupathi another ace player from our country. The recent split between the players was not accounted for misunderstandings. But this was accounted for brighter chances for the nation at the London Olympics. In all probability the two maestros will be paired with younger pair of legs to work better.

Well now let us look into what goes into the making of this legend tennis player (Paes) of India. The first quoted is a teetotaler life style with no drinks and smoke. This coupled by tedious fitness training to keep both, mind and body fit at all times. The main ingredients for keeping fit are yoga and stretching. These keep the cardio levels at the required levels. As age approaches anticipation gets better, but given the general biomechanics, reaction time gets slower. So, the trick is to enhance that reaction time with keeping up those energy levels. All this can happen only with continuous training and practice. Also he involves a lot in cross training, like playing foot ball while at home.

Keeping low on injuries also plays a vital point for sustained longevity of the game. And planning schedule ahead keeps one on track to enjoying playing with winning. Keeping criticism at bay and maintaining cool always helps in maintaining form. He revealed his last secret, `I keep practicing my Ujay breath - it's a form of breathing exercise from the Art of Living that I learnt at the age of 12. It helps reach maximum oxygen to my muscles and brain, helping them function better and that contributes to overall longevity too.’

It is now time for the aspiring youth to take the expert advice while pursuing your dreams in sports. This will help you scale up better results and aid you in longevity of career. [ with the inputs from internet and andhrawishesh ]
The Indian Ace Tennis player retained her form, while along with her Australian partner Anastasia Rodionova, had clinched the women's doubles title at the Pattaya Open on Sunday to stay inside the top-10 in doubles rankings. The title was the 13th to Sania in this segment. This has helped the player retain her seventh position in the WTA doubles ranking announced on Monday. If she consistently retains the position, Sania is to get a direct entry into the London Olympics.

Sania Mirza, a strong hope for the nation in women’s tennis in spite of loosing quarterfinals of the singles event in Pattaya Open, managed to climb up the rating 97th from 111th position. Board president N Srinivasan said there is no need for an inquiry and the selectors and coaches will look into ways to improve the performance of the team.

India's tour of Australia, "It is not proper to have a discussion on the performance of the team while the tour is on. It is a long tour. We had a four-Test series and a tri-series besides Twenty20 matches, which we split with Australia. We have begun well. I think it is premature to talk of an inquiry. I mean, there is no need at all, if you ask me," Srinivasan told a press conference in Chennai.

"Let the team come back and it is up to the selectors, the coach and the others to evaluate what needs to be done further to improve performance if they consider it so necessary," he added.

Srinivasan acknowledged that the team had not done well in England and Australia, but said it won the series at home against the West Indies, besides winning the World Cup.

"It is the same team that eight months ago was the toast of India after winning the World Cup. It is true that we lost to England. But the team had success in India against the West Indies. And, yet again, I mean, all of us know what happened in the Test series in Australia," he said.

Srinivasan said the overall cricket scenario in the country is good, with the game attracting enough eyeballs.

"We have had ups and downs in cricket but the viewership has been good. We had lots of cricket last year, won the World Cup and then there was IPL. Every year it's packed with cricket, so I don't think we need to be concerned about that."

On the controversial Umpire Decision Review System, Srinivasan said the BCCI's stand of opposing the UDRS is vindicated.

"Our stand has been vindicated. More countries are saying that DRS is not accurate enough. ICC doesn't play cricket, members do. We don't have problems with members," he said.

Baffled with the rotation policy, former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram said it does not work in the sub-continent and the Indian team management should not have rested a player of Sachin Tendulkar's stature.

"Don't experiment with Sachin Tendulkar," warned Akram. "Rotation policy does not work in our part of the world. A player like Tendulkar cannot be rested. I mean, India did win without Tendulkar in Adelaide, but his presence always plays on the mind of the rival team. That's why he is a Tendulkar. His stature is just too big to ignore," he added.

The former speedster wondered if there were any fitness issues but said Tendulkar must play all matches.

"When you have doubts about Tendulkar's ability and preparedness, then there is something wrong with the team management.

"If you have a Tendulkar in the squad, you cannot afford to have him on the bench. He must play all games," Akram told a website.

The selectors might have given rest to the iconic batsman to ensure that Tendulkar is better prepared to score his 100th international century, but Akram felt the only way to make Tendulkar get to the landmark is to play him.

"If that's the objective then let Tendulkar achieve the milestone...If he gets a century, the whole team profits. And in any case, the rotation policy should be applicable for all 11 positions," he insisted.

Akram said though giving chance to youngsters is a step in the right direction, it raises questions on the future of senior players and Tendulkar also comes in the frame.

"Tendulkar is the greatest Indian player. When and how he wants to leave should be left to him. The BCCI and the selectors should have a chat with him. If he wants to play the 2015 World Cup, then fair enough. But if I was Tendulkar, I would opt out of ODIs and extend my Test career."
Australian cricket allrounder Shane Watson on Saturday said he needs another week to recover fully from his calf injury and is not pushing himself for an international recall.

Watson made his first appearance on the field on Saturday since injuring his calf muscle during Australia's second Test win over South Africa in Johannesburg last November.

Watson made his Sydney grade debut for Sutherland against Eastern Suburbs at Waverley Oval in a one-day game and smacked 30 off 27 balls and finished with 0-17 off six overs.

Watson said he intends to gradually increase his bowling workload and play for New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield match against Western Australia starting in Perth on Friday.

"It's been a very frustrating couple of months. It's something I love, doing so much, so I missed it a lot. There's been a few false starts over the last month or so, so to be able to get through the game was the most important thing," Watson was quoted as saying Sydney Morning Herald.

“Veteron Cricket Player Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman should not be talked of retirement now”. Former New Zealand Cricketer Richard Hadly suggests that the trio should play for some more time till the youth gears up. Hadly recalls the pressure he was facing when he wanted to break the record of Ian Botham and says that the pressure on Sachin Tendulkar to complete 100 the Century is understandable.
Richard Hadly says that the entire team is looking for Sachin’s 100th Century. It is not a wise thing for Indian Cricket Team to lose all these players at a time Hadly observes. The controversy between the financial supporter of Team India, Sahara India Pariwar and the Board of Cricket Control in India seems to have widened more. Sahara now plans to sign a five year sponsor deal with Hockey India. And in the process the country's men's and women's hockey teams at both the senior and junior level will get the financial backing of the corporate giant till 2017.

As per the information on Tuesday the deal is almost on the final stage. "More or less everything has been finalized. Most probably tomorrow, the agreement would be signed. We are hoping for a deal worth between Rs 15 to 17 Cr because we need more money to promote the sport," said a Hockey India official. But on behalf of Sahara, Abhijit Sarkar, Head, Sahara India's corporate communications felt the final details will be out in a couple of days. He also ascertained that the company was discussing internally, for extending the deal.

Indian Hockey team was earlier sponsored by Sahara and the deal ended last month, which was originally signed in 2003. But the matter earns prominence after Sahara withdrew its sponsorship to Team India, with speculations that this time the deal would cover a bigger amount to enhance the image of the national game. [ With inputs from internet and andhrawishesh ]
Even the former Australian Captain Steve Waugh turning philosophical and equally nostalgic over Sachin Tendulkar much awaited 100th 100. But was however confident about the master blaster breaking the 'Don Bradman jinx' by crossing the 100th 100 hurdle. He also added that even if the stalwart does not accomplish the task, he is still the greatest player of our times.

Speaking to media the former Cap drew parallels between both the great players Don Bradman and Sachin. He said failure to score 100th 100 could be compared to Don Bradman retiring at 99.94 averages.

"I think it's a huge statistic and India is obsessed by stats. The whole country wants him to get his one-hundredth 100 so maybe that's where the real pressure is coming from. It will be nice if he could get it down the road, but if he doesn't get it I certainly won't think any less of him as a player," news.com.au quoted Waugh, as saying. "He's a great player. You know Bradman wasn't meant to average 100, maybe Tendulkar is not meant to get a hundredth century. But I think he'll get it pretty shortly," he added.
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) at last seems to have got off its high pedestal and expressed interest in discussing long impending issues with Sahara India. The development came to light after the mighty financial giant on February 04 decided to restrain from the IPL auction held in Bangalore. The giant seemed to be dejected with the whims and fancies of the former since its first sponsorship deal in 2001 but largely relating to the IPL franchise of Pune Warriors.

BCCI President N Srinivasan on Monday admitted that the relationship between the BCCI and Sahara was over a decade and of course with ups and downs. But a meeting on a table would end the dispute. "Most certainly, we are ready to meet and sort out the matters. We have no problems with that. We do appreciate what Sahara have done. They might have felt aggrieved and did not get what they wanted from the IPL. We had good relationships and so we should sort out the issues," Srinivasan said.

In its formal statement, Sahara referred to several points of dispute with the BCCI, dating back to its first sponsorship deal in 2001 but largely relating to the IPL. It said it would "continue paying the sponsorship money" to the BCCI for a period of "2-4 months" it would take to find a new sponsor.

Though, initially BCCI gave Luke warm responses to the statement. But with actual statistics in the fore front, BCCI felt the best way to sort out the dispute at the earliest would be a better alternative. Sahara is yet to respond on the BCCI’s request. True sometimes people learn the hard way.[ with inputs from internet and andhrawishesh]
He substantiated his claims, "Schumacher (Michael) is 43, drivers like Webber (Mark) and I are in the mid-30s, and there are some of them in the late 30s.
